HEALTH STORY PROJECT TO OFFER TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP AT MTIA 2010
Aimed to expedite integration of narrative notes and electronic medical record systems

February 3, 2010 -- The Health Story Project is proud to partner with the Medical Transcription Industry Association (MTIA) to offer a technology workshop at the MTIA 21st Annual Conference on Thursday, April 29th, 2010 at the Hilton Ocean Walk Village, Daytona Beach, Florida.

Structured narrative notes offer a way forward for the healthcare documentation industry by adding the human narrative element to electronic medical records. This workshop will take an in-depth look at this concept while providing an overview of Health Level Seven (HL7) Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) and emphasizing the relationship to dictation/transcription and meaningful use of electronic health record (EHR) technology. CDA is an electronic format for the structure and semantics of clinical notes widely adopted for use within electronic health records. It supports simple XML encoding, such as can be achieved through any dictation/transcription process and complex encoding achieved through abstractor annotation, structured entry and natural language processing.

Attendees will learn the scope and areas of application of the CDA specification; who is using it within the U.S., where and for what purpose; and the basics of the technical specification itself. Attendees will be introduced to the Health Story-sponsored CDA Implementation Guides for History & Physical, Consult, Diagnostic Imaging Report, Operative Note, Discharge Summary and the new guides for Procedure Note and Unstructured Documents.

Primary Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the scope and intent of CDA
  • Provide examples of areas of application for CDA
  • List the types of tools that are used with CDA
  • Describe how transcribed CDA documents are imported into EMR systems
  • Review the basics of the CDA specification
  • Explain the current status and work on CDA, including within the Health Story Project
  • Consider how adoption of CDA can support your organization’s mission

Who Should Attend?
IT professionals who are responsible for their organization’s IT landscape and are seeking to begin the implementation of this critically important technology solution.

About Health Story

The Health Story Project, founded a little over two years ago, is a collaborative of healthcare vendors, providers and associations. This project develops HL7 Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) Implementation Guides for common types of electronic healthcare documents, brings them through the HL7 ballot process and promotes their adoption within the industry. Over the previous two years, the initiative supported the development of five technical implementation guides for standard electronic documents, including the Consultation Note, History and Physical, Operative Note, Discharge Summary and Diagnostic Imaging Report. Work is currently underway within HL7 to produce standards for a Procedure Note for an endoscopy report and CDA for Unstructured Documents.

The Health Story Project’s five-year plan includes ramping up development of implementation guides for additional types of clinical documents and promoting their adoption within industry. Members are also working to influence policy decisions that would provide incentives for those who take the Health Story approach toward enhancing their EHR systems with information from narrated notes – providing patients with comprehensive electronic records that offer a complete health story.
