HEALTH STORY PROJECT MEMBERS TO EXHIBIT AT AHIMA
Presence intended to increase awareness of the Health Story Pathway
Approach Integrates Narrative Notes and the EMR; Promotes Continuity of Care

September 23, 2009 -- Nine members of the Health Story Project will exhibit at the 81st American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Convention and Exhibit, October 3-8, 2009, in Grapevine, TX. Through member exhibits and three presentations, the project intends to increase awareness of the Health Story pathway to the EMR.

Members share the vision that all of the clinical information required for good patient care, administration, reporting and research will be readily available electronically, including information from narrative documents. The project offers standards-based technical resources for integrating narrative notes with the EHR - supporting comprehensive electronic clinical records that offer a patient’s complete health story.

The Health Story Project, founded a little over two years ago, is a collaborative of healthcare vendors, providers and associations. This project develops HL7 Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) Implementation Guides for common types of electronic healthcare documents, brings them through the HL7 ballot process and promotes their adoption within the industry. Over the previous two years, the initiative supported the development of five technical implementation guides for standard electronic documents, including the Consultation Note, History and Physical, Operative Note, Discharge Summary and Diagnostic Imaging Report. Work is currently underway within HL7 to produce standards for a Procedure Note for an endoscopy report and a CDA with .PDF body.

The Health Story Project’s five-year plan includes ramping up development of implementation guides for additional types of clinical documents and promoting their adoption within industry. Members are also working to influence policy decisions that would provide incentives for those who take the Health Story approach toward enhancing their EHR systems with information from narrated notes – providing patients with comprehensive electronic records that offer a complete health story.
